Basic Tips for Paddle Tennis Beginners

Paddle tennis has been around for more than a century and in recent years has begun to enjoy more widespread popularity. Similar to lawn tennis in some ways, paddle tennis has a smaller court, solid paddles rather than racquets and a depressurised ball. Usually played as a doubles game, the size of the court makes for a faster-paced game with more net play than lawn tennis. For beginners, there are a few basic tips to help get the most enjoyment out of the game.

Learning the Drive Strategy

With faster play more often at the net, paddle tennis players need to have a good drive strategy to be able to consistently beat opponents. A good drive often follows a short overhead shot from the opposing team, ideally towards your strongest side and with the opponents out of position. The best place to aim is towards the opponent furthest from the net while they are out of position, thus forcing them to attempt a difficult low volley.

Tips for Serving

When serving the ball in paddle tennis, it is best to lift the arm slowly and not toss the ball higher than you can comfortably reach with the paddle. Try to maintain a relaxed grip with a laid back wrist and make contact with the ball just in front of the body and towards your playing hand side. Don’t swing down into the court, but rather up and over the net. If the paddle face brushes rather than hits the ball, this will give you the spin you need to pull off a good serve. A good tip for practicing serves during a friendly game is to adapt the rules slightly and allow each player two chances to serve, thus eradicating the added pressure that comes from having to pull it off first time.
